New SharePoint Development Model Triggers Hopes, Questions (PC Advisor)
SharePoint’s new application development model has piqued the interest of ISVs and enterprise developers who create applications for Microsoft’s enterprise collaboration server. The new platform, consistent with Web application standards, is designed to simplify and make more flexible and secure the creation and deployment of applications for the on-premise and cloud versions of SharePoint 2013, due in the first quarter next year.

Microsoft Emphasizes Cloud-First with SharePoint 2013 (Virtualization Review)
As Microsoft showcased its new SharePoint 2013 and the SharePoint online upgrades to its Office 365 service this week, it raises the question of how far organizations are willing to go to phase out their premises-based software in favor of shifting everyday work to a service-based model.

The Four Types of Collaboration Deployments (CMSWire)
There are essentially four ways to go about implementing an enterprise collaboration initiative at any organization, each with their own challenges. The factors that control the four options are: the duration of the deployment and the scope of the deployment (length of time and how broad the deployment is i.e. across a department or enterprise). Other types of special factors may present themselves on a case-by-case basis but are unique, most organizations fall into one of these four deployments (often called pilots) which can be seen below.

Windows Azure: Cloud Goes Mobile For Windows Phone 8 (Midsize Insider)
The cloud is on the move, at least at Microsoft. The company announced that its Windows Azure cloud-based operating system will be extended to support Windows Phone 8. Taking what feels like a page from Google’s book, Redmond seems to be aiming at linking Azure, Windows Phone 8, and Windows 8 closely together. Application developers will thus be able to write highly portable code to embrace all Windows-running devices.

The Turbulent Move to the Cloud (AIIM)
We can all see that our organizations are getting to be more mobile — whether than means people doing more from their smart phones and tablets, or just that teams are more geographically dispersed is really a moot point: how we access our content and tools is changing as technology advances. The traditional model of going to a workspace, logging into a desktop PC, and from there accessing all of the content and productivity solutions you need is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, regardless of industry or regulatory concerns. Amidst all of this, IT departments are looking to reduce costs.

Why Windows 8? (Business Insider)
While Microsoft’s new Windows 8 has received an unexpected share of positive press, many skeptics aren’t convinced that the new operating system has been designed or is being launched properly.  Of all the criticisms leveraged against Windows 8, the one that resonates most strongly with me was a comment in a recent Bloomberg BusinessWeek piece: “Just having the Windows name still around captures the problems of this company,” says Paul Saffo, a longtime technology forecaster.

Microsoft’s Ballmer Says Windows Can Dance Between Android and iPhone. Really? (ComputerWorld)
We all know the computer world is mutating into one comprised of mobile devices, and while Apple [AAPL] and Samsung [SSNLF] lead this game, Microsoft [MSFT] isn’t out the smartphone race just yet and company CEO, Steve Ballmer, thinks he’s in with a chance.

Introduction to Minimal Download Strategy in SharePoint 2013 (Bill Baer)
Minimal Download Strategy in SharePoint 2013 improves rendering performance when browsing content where large parts of the page do not change providing a more fluid navigation experience. For example when navigating between a site’s home page and Shared Documents page only the content that has changed between the source and destination page (controls and placeholders in the content area) are downloaded and the URL subsequently updated where the chrome is persisted.

SharePoint Online: Video Streaming (SharePoint (and Project Server) Shenanigans)
The following video demonstrates how to add streaming video to a SharePoint Online private site collection.

Don’t Litter–Save Documents in SharePoint (T3chnicalLead)
So you saw the title and thought – “HUH, what is this guy smoking?”  Well, I totally understand, it isn’t exactly the most conventional title, but stay with me, it will all make sense shortly. One of the biggest challenges in SharePoint the world over is change management.  The simple fact, which continuous to baffle minds, is that amazing solutions are churned out from provider to provider, but many users that are surveyed simply don’t use them.

Retrieve SharePoint Managed Accounts Password (ITPro)
More often than not we get tossed into working with SharePoint in different environments where a lot of things are not provided. In most cases (like mine) the former admin over the Farm did not provide me with key usernames and passwords to pertinent service accounts. Luckily, a handy network engineer was able to provide some, except a really important one. Which one you may ask….how about the SharePoint Farm Account -_- (just great). After searching various spreadsheets and documentation I could not find the credentials for this account. Then it struck me, there should be a way to retrieve the account name somehow using PowerShell.

Top Ten Productivity Reasons to Move to Microsoft SharePoint 2013 (EndUserSharePoint)
Microsoft is heavy in its campaign since publically making available the Microsoft Office 2013 Preview for client and server operating systems in July. I spend a great deal of time discussing with our customers all things business productivity. One of the biggest questions that keeps coming up is whether they should upgrade to SharePoint 2013 sooner rather than later.

Confessions of a (Post) SharePoint Architect: Yellow Belt Platitude Kung-fu (Clever Workarounds)

For the other twelve SharePoint professionals who are not there, I know your pain.

SharePoint 2013: “App” Nomenclature May Take Some Getting Used To (SharePointEduTech)
To borrow an old, bad joke; “When is an app not an app? When it’s a document library!” It’s obvious that Microsoft has invested a tremendous amount of time and mindshare into making the Wave 15 (SharePoint 2013) products “app friendly.” This is an exciting shift in focus for the SharePoint platform, as well as for the Office products, and especially Office 365. The investment they’ve made in enabling developers to build solutions that can function in hybrid cloud deployments with online and offline capabilities is critical, and is likely to yield a fantastic App ecosystem in the future.

SPC 2012: The Sharing the Point Roundtable Discussion, & Some Ruminations on This Year’s Microsoft SharePoint Conference (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I’ve been thinking about how I could summarize my experience at this year’s SPC, and I’ve come to realize –given my Sharing the Point-related activities at this year’s Conference, combined with my blogging of and tweeting from the event, along with meeting and speaking with Bamboo customers, partners, and friends both new and old– that SharePoint community is the connective tissue that binds SPC together for me.
